More Lyrics

I haven’t done this for awhile but heard a new song today that I downloaded from iTunes a few days back. The lyrics are really quite good so I thought I would put them down. I recommend getting ahold of a copy of this song too. Now be aware that I am not much into Mozart and Bach and all of that “educated” music. I am plenty into educated reading, but when it comes to music, I like rock. Other styles have value of course but good old rock is what really gets inside me. It actually calms me. I’m not sure what that says about me. Probably not anything good. Anyway this is one of Nickleback’s new songs, If Today Was Your Last Day. I realize that not everything in the song may be right on for everybody, but I like it because it speaks of living in the moment, not getting too caught up in your past, and offering grace. And I realize that Nickelback may not be about everything right and clean, but I am a firm believer in claiming truth anywhere that I find it, and here some is.

Nickelback: If Today Was Your Last Day

my best friend gave me the best advice
he said each day’s a gift & not a given right
leave no stone unturned
leave your fears behind
& try to take the path less travelled by
that first step you take is the longest stride

if today was your last day
& tomorrow was too late
could you say goodbye to yesterday?
would you leave each moment like your last?
leave old pictures in the past?
donate every dime you had?
if today was your last day

against the grain should be a way of life
what’s worth the price is always worth the fight
every second counts ’cause
there’s no second try
so live like you’re never livin twice
don’t take the free ride in your own life

if today was your last day
& tomorrow was too late
could you say goodbye to yesterday?
would you leave each moment like your last?
leave old pictures in the past?
donate every dime you had?
would you call those friends you’ve never seen?
reminisce old memories?
would you forgive your enemies?
would you find that one your dreaming of?
swear up & down to God above
that you’ll finally fall in love?
if today was your last day

if today was your last day
would you make it up by mending a broken heart
you know it’s never too late
to shoot for the stars
regardless of who you are
so do whatever it takes
’cause you can’t rewind
a moment in this life
let nothing stand in your way
cause the hands of time are never on your side

if today was your last day
& tomorrow was too late
could you say goodbye to yesterday?
would you leave each moment like your last?
leave old pictures in the past?
donate every dime you had?
would you call those friends you’ve never seen?
reminisce old memories?
would you forgive your enemies?
would you find that one your dreaming of?
swear up & down to God above
that you’ll finally fall in love?
if today was your last day

  1. i love RAWK! but Nickelback doesn’t always do it for me… this has really redeemed them in my eyes, this song is great! and i do find myself singing along with them, even if i don’t want to. those tricky Canadians ;-) (hi SVS and John T!)

  2. Luke. Glad you enjoyed it. You know, now having turned 40 just 10 days ago, I grew up in the age of the 1970’s and 1980’s when RAWK music was “of the devil” and there was pretty much no other way to look at it. I struggled with loving the sound of AC/DC, Van Halen, and even KISS, and I’m sure you know where even just kind of enjoying KISS and AC/DC lands you, directly into the heart of hell itself. And I am not pretending to ignore the fact that some of the music these groups put out there is just not for me and seems a bit unnecessarily filled with crap. Nickelback admittedly has a few of those crap-filled songs. But they also have some very redeeming stuff that contains quite a bit of truth, and anywhere there is truth and goodness, even when it is from AC/DC and Nickelback, I believe that God is responsible for it, and I claim it. I’ll bet Yael loves KISS. Gene Simmons is an awfully shrewd genius level nice little Jewish boy. I have come to have a certain respect for him actually.

  3. Naw, KISS was never my style. Def Leppard, Van Halen, Journey from those days. My favorite was ELO. I used to play in an orchestra and I love the mixing that in with a good beat.

  4. yeah, like anything there’s a fair amount of crap.. but to deny God’s revelation in rock music really limits the reach of God, now doesn’t it? just like the TULIP Calvinists… Limited Atonement?! are you serious? if God came and died, wouldn’t that be a universal thing?!?! ugh.. i don’t get sectarian mentalities.. well i get ’em, but i don’t. you feel’n me?

  5. Luke. I am feeling you. Now you’ve opened a can of worms that my wife and I have just begun venturing into. That idea of “universal.” And of all places on a post about Nickelback lyrics. Crazy world. So I will just ask bluntly…what is your take on the whole who is saved and who is not? Which brings up the heaven and hell issue…is hell a real place? We have come from a place where I truly believed at one point that only Nazarenes would likely be in heaven. Everyone else there if they made it was by the skin of their teeth. I have obviously rethought the whole spiritual heaven existence thing and am right there with NT Wright. But what about universal salvation? Give me your thoughts and some good sources to read about it.

  6. If today was my last day – believe me – this band would the be the last band I would listen to – this is crap Canadian rock (and I think these guys write some of the worst lyrics I have ever heard). Rant over about Nickelback.

That all being said, I like the lyrics to this song (how much did they have to pay satan for these>). I think I might download the song – I have heard it on the radio a few times – not bad (not great) – but it’s liveable.

That also being said, I have to admit – the lyrics are really quite good (what did you say they paid satan for these?). One could practically write a blog from each verse or chorus – there is a lot to digest – but in essence – its about not wasting our time here and treating others with value (messages I love).

  7. my collegue here at seminary wrote on this topic in his paper: “Apokatastasis in the Thought of Origen and Gregory of Nyssa”. it’s an excellent read! http://brycerich.net/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=49:apokatastasis-origen-gregory-nyssa&catid=18:ch111&Itemid=8

logically, it stands i’m a universalist. If God is love, and love brings mercy, God will always forgive. However, i do think there is a hell for those who put THEMSELVES there. think “What Dreams May Come” style where it’s the lady who stays in hell, no one put her there!

but that’s the afterlife.. i’m not too terribly concerned with it. we’ll either be wormfood or reunited with God… either know nothing or know it all! the thing is, we’re all going to find out sooner or later… i just hope it’s later rather than sooner.

  8. SVS. Well, sorry to strike a bit of a nerve :). I feel your pain about Nickelback. Some of their stuff is real crap. But, then they pull a good one out of their butts every now and then. It seems they either do it really well or load it full of crap. Interesting dichotomy. You would probably know better about their relationship level with satan than me.

  9. Well Doug

Im a huge AC DC fan, but unfortunately the only thing redeeming about their music is the sound ;)
    Shot down in flames lol

  10. Svs……..Im sorry but if you cant smile listening to Animals by Nickelback, well then my friend you are a Fundy :)

  11. I am not too worried about old Nickelback – just that they blow something fierce (lol).

Like Johnny, I am a huge rock fan – which includes the likes of ACDC, Ozzy/Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Iron Maiden, G N R, Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd…etc. Great rock and great songs – and when I try to put Nickelback in that company – yeah it kinda shames the rock n roll legends (lol).

Maybe I am a fundy – or maybe I have some taste when it comes to ‘good rock’…like fine wine and Baby Duck comparisons. :)
