Rohr’s The Naked Now

Just finished Richard Rohr’s book, The Naked Now. For some reason, I don’t like the term “mystics” as he uses in the subtitle. Not sure why that is. But it’s a great book. Mainly about how our Greek dualistic logical thinking process are getting us in trouble when we constantly use them within our spirituality. It has really brought to light ways within myself that I operate with a dualistic mindset. Very pertinent topic as I think that most of Rob Bell’s critics are trapped within their own dualism. There are hints in Love Wins of Bell’s non-dualistic thought. I think this is why many critics don’t understand his book or the purposes behind it. And I can see how my own bent towards dualism harms many if not all of my relationships, especially those with God, my wife, and my kids. I can already feel myself going deeper in my relationships because of practicing mindfulness which is what mysticism is mainly about.

I will share more from this book and Love Wins as time goes along but I wanted to share one of my favorite quotes from The Naked Now. One page 45:

“It is an amazing arrogance that allows Christians to so readily believe that their mental understanding of things is anywhere close to that of Jesus. Jesus said, ‘I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life’ (John 14:6). I think the intended effect of that often misused line is this: If Jesus is the Truth, then you probably aren’t!”

That’s good stuff, my friends, and something to humble us all as we pass judgment on those around us, especially when we think we know that “Ghandi is in hell.”

Starting Brian McLaren’s, Naked Spirituality.
